Existential Oedipus: In Search of Free Will on a Sea of Determinism (And Other Adventures in Psychoanalytic-Existential Phenomenology)

Each theoretical school of psychiatry - broadly, the bio-psycho-social perspectives - conceptualizes its own brand of determinism, whether it is by synaptic junctions, the socio-cultural matrix, or unconscious demands driving repetitions of behavior. Morover, we can break determinism down further because each sub-school of psychoanalysis has its own intricate and lovingly described system of determinism. These extraordinary varieties of determinism known by their distinctive and subtle repetitive patterns of behavior - constitute, then, our thrown-ness, or existential givens, our fated Situations. Free Will, I assert, establishes itself at these wilder borders, where Determinism meets Being. And this is precisely where we therapists dig in.

| Alfred Margulies is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at the Psychoanalytic Institute of New England, East. Associate Chairman, Department of Psychiatry, Cambridge Health Alliance, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School. His relevant experience includes dozens of lectures and presentations on Psychoanalytic therapy over the last thirty years in many venues. he is also the author of the acclaimed The Empathic Imagination.
